If anyone is interested, the RJ45 connector is wired like this (CC128 PCB version V2.3H)
Pin = Use 1 = +v Unregulated (Same as the PSU input) 2 = PIC chip pin 52 (PGC) 3 = +V Regulated 4 = GND 5 = PIC chip pin 47 (PGD) 6 = PIC chip pin 9 (Program Voltage (nMCLR)) 7 = Unit RX 8 = Unit TX
So the PIC can be reprogrammed with the correct cable/interface, and TX/RX are connected (as they are in the USB to Serial cable), so some commands may be able to be sent to the unit !! (maybe not with this firmware)

PS the reason I was inside the unit was to see if I could add a serial connector instead of the RJ45 connector.
